There must be hundreds of small weight loss tips that can be provided to anyone who is currently on a diet or trying to loss weight. I remember very clearly how my grandmother would provide all of us kids with various ways in which we could cut back on the calories. I would like to relate a few of Granny’s tips here.
Granny never was much of a person to turn down cookies. In fact she would always encourage us children to eat a cookie in the evening. Most people think that when you are on a diet you should cut out all the high calorie items such as cookies but that is far from the truth.
Granny would tell us how the mere act of putting our favorite foods off limits would eventually lead us to what she referred to as “rebound eating”. She would tell us that in place of cutting out her home made cookies completely we should merely eat a single one of her fresh baked cookies instead of a hand full. She would always lecture us that if we wished to enjoy our favorite foods we could do so and still lose weight but we merely had to do so in moderation. That was granny for you.
I never could understand why my mother never brought any of granny’s cookies home with her. Instead we would have to go to grannies and eat them there. Finally I was informed that one of grannies favorite weight loss tips was not to eat the food at home. Never take home cookies or candy. We were always told that it was better to enjoy our treats at grannies house. Whenever we wanted a special treat mother would pack us all in the family car and tote us off to visit granny. I later found out that this tip from granny was the reason we make an adventure out of going out to eat. By making our visit into an adventure we never have to worry about the temptations relating to having the treats in the home. In the end it was a fun way to visit with granny as well as a unique way to try and lose weight.
Mini-meals were one of granny’s favorite weight loss tips and I finally found out why they were important to her. Granny would serve us several mini meals each day when we would visit her. Finally she revealed the reasoning behind these types of weight loss tips. She would always point her finger to her stomach and remark that if we eat fewer calories than we burn then we will lose any extra weight. Granny was a wise women for she knew that it was a real challenge to go hungry all the time therefore it was her philosophy that we should eat 4 or 5 mini-meals each day.
In support of grannies actions recent studies have revealed that those people that eat four or five meals per day are much better able to adequately control their appetite resulting in better control over their weight. Let’s chalk another one up for granny’s wisdom.
In my eyes the best weight loss tip that granny gave to us was that we should eat protein at each of our meals. Once again granny would preach to us that protein would build strong bones and muscles in our little bodies and allow us to grow up strong and healthy.
Okay let’s provide granny with another blue ribbon. She was actually very correct in her assumptions. Protein has been found to build up muscle mass and it tends to encourage fat burning. So all that yogurt, nuts, cheese, and beans that granny feed us worked very much to our advantage.
In conclusion all I can say is that if your granny tells you something is good for you then by golly she must be right after all mine was!

In this excerpt, Dr. Doug Graham shares some surprising information on diet, dental health and disease.Dr. Doug Graham is a lifetime athlete and 27-year raw fooder. He’s been an advisor to top performers including tennis legend Martina Navratilova. He’s also the author of the lifestyle book 80/10/10. Kevin Great. I wanted to talk to you about tooth care because a lot of people who get into the raw food diet have specific teeth issues that may arise. What are some of the challenges that people face? What are some of the things that you’ve done to kind of help reverse some of that?Dr. Graham: Tooth care, it’s an interesting thing. Long ago people asked me to write about diseases. I said, “You know, I don’t really write about diseases because diseases are all pretty much the same. If you stop participating in the cause, the body won’t generate the symptoms.” Every individual disease, there’s thousands and thousands of human health conditions. I think it comes up the same with teeth. Oral hygiene and oral health is once again just one tiny aspect. It would be a shame if we were out there in the world telling people, “Look, we’ve got this diet. It’s the best diet in the world for everybody but it’s really terrible for your teeth.” Well that wouldn’t work. It turns out that the diet that we espouse is really wonderful for our teeth.
And obviously, but it still has to be said, because anybody that’s ever been to a dentist’s office has noticed that the dentist offices around the world are filled with people eating cooked food. So we can’t just look at raw food and say, “Raw food is really bad for your teeth because look what happens,” because we’re seeing the same thing happen on cooked food. At the same time we’re also seeing two other issues going on with our teeth that have to be at least allowed for. One is the fact, as disclosed in Pottinger’s Cat’s, that with every generation of cats eating a diet that was not species specific there was degeneration, both physical and physiological. In other words in the form and function and the design of the cat we saw decay.
We notice in human anatomy that changes have happened. One of the big ones that happens with malnutrition over generations is a loss of what is called the broadness, a narrowing of the dental arch. So for instance, if I smile at you, you might see 8 or 10 teeth whereas someone with a broader dental arch would smile at you and you would see 12 teeth or 14 teeth. The broader the front of that arch is, the wider the horseshoe, effectively, that the teeth make, the more room there is for teeth. So we’re seeing an increase with each generation. We’re seeing an increase in the number of children who need orthodontic work because there simply isn’t enough room for the number of teeth that are coming in, so they start crossing over each other instead of sitting alongside of each other.
We have inherited not only this problem but several others, with the health of our teeth, before we ever went raw. Then we have these issues with going raw. One of them is that a lot of people go raw and have a really hard time staying raw, so they’re switching back and forth between cooked and raw, which doesn’t do our teeth a lot of good, especially the kinds of foods that tend to get cooked, because as you become aware on some level, cooked food is really sticky. It sticks to our teeth like crazy. If we’re going to eat food that sticks to our teeth and a bunch of sweet foods as well, we’re going to have problems. In fact, anything that sticks to your teeth is a problem. All cooked food is sticky, all dehydrated food is sticky to some degree, stickier than its fresh counterpart. Nuts and seeds are sticky, they’ve been dehydrated.
The other problem that comes in is almost invariably some aspect of nature attack us when we go raw. We become ‘nature boys’ and ‘nature girls’ to a greater degree than we ever were before. A lot of people have come to me and said, “I went raw four years ago. I stopped using shampoo. I stopped using deodorant. I stopped using a toothpaste. No animal brushes their teeth. I stopped brushing my teeth.” The number of people who’ve told me that is just astonishing. And I’m going, “Yeah, you know, you didn’t really earn that right the first day you went raw to expect that your body could function as if you had been raw your entire life and your parents had been raw their entire life and it had gone back for generations.” I’m not really sure that no teeth care is the plan.
In fact, it’s not the plan that I recommend. I recommend a tooth care plan. I recommend that you do clean your teeth after you eat and that you do not only a careful brushing under the gum line, or right at the gum line – this is where our teeth are most vulnerable – but that you also get out the particulate matter that’s in between your teeth. Whether you’re doing that with a bristly kind of round brush or whether you’re doing that with floss or whether you’re doing that with pick or a brush pick, there’s a wide variety of ways to do it.
We eat raw food and our teeth feel so clean but in fact there’s still stuff, there’s still material. And organic material stuck between your teeth is going to be broken down by bacteria. The bacteria will produce acid that will harm your teeth. In almost every case, I would say in every case of dental issues that I’ve seen with raw fooders, it’s a matter of them having decay at the gum line. It’s always at the gum line. It’s not the enamel portion that they’re having such problems with, it’s at the gum line where there isn’t enamel. And this is because on a standard cooked food diet we actually cause a loss of gums but also an inflammation of the gums. When the gums are inflamed, even though we’ve lost some gum matter, the inflammation makes them bigger and it covers up that area of tooth that has no enamel. When the source of the irritation goes away, we start eating raw foods that are not irritating to the gums instead of the cooked foods that have irritants built right into them, the food additives all function as irritants to the gums and so they become inflamed.
When we go to raw foods and we get rid of that irritation, the inflammation also goes down at which point we start to expose the teeth at the gum line, areas of teeth that don’t have enamel, and without cleaning them on a regular basis you’re definitely going to have tartar build up. What happens is kind of like a pearl in an oyster; the pearl functions as an irritant. If you get a little tiny bit of tartar under the gum line. If you get a little piece of food under the gum line it’s like picking up the blankets on the bed, it pulls the gum off of the teeth and then anything else can get in under there. At every meal stuff starts getting under there and the gums just get worse and worse, they recede quickly.
The gums are supposed to be dull in color, they should not be shiny. They’re supposed to be sort of stippled looking. They should not be puffy looking in any way, shape or form. If your gums are puffy or shiny, if the color isn’t that of healthy gums, you need to take care of them. This idea that we can live without washing is just not founded. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, as the old saying goes. Certainly cleanliness is a huge part of health and hygiene for human beings. We have to take care of ourselves.

You may be tired of hearing the same advice repeated over and over, but the truth is, there are no new weight loss tips. Losing weight means changing your eating habits, exercising more, and learning how to live a generally healthy lifestyle. A weight loss program may help you lose the initial pounds and give you advice on how to keep them off, but the rest is up to you. Going straight back to your old habits is not going to help you stay in shape, or stay healthy. With or without a formal program, these tips are sound advice. 1. Why do you want to lose weight?If you want to improve your health, look and feel better – great! If you want to be able to play with your kids more, that’s super. Trying to get your ex back, look better than the next door neighbour, or because your partner says you should – not good reasons. The best motivation to lose weight is for yourself – nobody else.2. Choose your weight loss program carefullyYou must be realistic when you choose how you are going to go about losing weight. Your lifestyle may not suit every type of program or diet, and choosing one that you cannot adjust to or cope with is setting yourself up for failure. Look at your current eating habits, level of physical activity, work schedule, family and social life. Think realistically about how much change each of those areas can withstand.

3. Set practical, realistic goals

Setting goals that are virtually impossible to reach sets you up for failure from the start. Monthly or weekly goals are easier to achieve.4. Keep a recordWhether you use a food diary or a success journal, get into the habit of recording your eating habits – and preferably start doing this before you go on a weight loss program. Record what you eat, when you eat – and why you eat. Why you eat will help you identify your ‘food triggers’ that set off unhealthy eating habits. Boredom, loneliness, anger, frustration and stress can often lead us to unhealthy snacks and comfort food, even though we know it’s not good for us. Use your diary or journal to record your goals, and your progress.5. Program for success, but expect some bad daysAccept that there will be bad days – and even bad weeks. You will have a day or two where it just gets too much for you. You may skip a workout, or find yourself unable to resist that donut. It’s okay to slip up! One bad day or one poor decision, does not mean you have failed. It just means you had a bad day. It is NOT okay to give up.6. Get supportWhether it’s friends, family or an online group, make sure you have people to support and encourage you – especially on those bad days. There are thousands of people in online groups who share their experiences with different diets and weight loss programs, have been through the same difficulties you may be facing, and many who have succeeded. 7. ExerciseWhether you like it or not, some form of physical activity must be included in a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it help you lose weight, but it will help you maintain the weight loss. Of course, the health benefits are a big factor – even if you’re thin, exercise is good for you. Your exercise program should involve activities that you enjoy doing, otherwise you’re going to find any excuse not to do it. 8. EatingWhether you are following a specific diet plan, counting calories, or just cutting down on the ‘bad’ food, there are a couple of things that can help you.Eat slowly. It takes 20 minutes from the time you start eating, for your brain to register feelings of fullness. If you gulp your food down in less time, you won’t know you’re too full until it’s too late. Watch those portions. when you are out, eat half the meal and take the rest home in a take out box. At home, use smaller plates.Go easy on the salt, limit high fat foods, replace red meat with lean poultry and fish, and drink lots of water. Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast.9. Chart your progressKeeping track of your progress, including any slow or stalled loss periods, will let you see what helps you to succeed, what causes problems, and when to celebrate. If your progress has stalled, particularly towards the end of your diet, you may have hit a plateau. The best way to overcome this is to change something. A plateau means your body has settled into a routine, and often all it needs is a little jolt to get it burning fat again.10.Have a maintenance plan!It is obvious that once you’ve lost weight, going back to your old habits will bring the weight back on. Either your diet was so radical it is impossible to adapt it for real life, or the weight loss program failed to explain how the dietary changes made to lose weight can be adapted to maintain your new weight. After your ‘diet’ is finished, you should have a better idea of what to eat, when to eat, and how to eat it. Adapting your weight loss program to a weight loss maintenance program and a new healthy lifestyle should be a priority.Most of us know when we’re eating the wrong food or not exercising enough, but that isn’t always enough. A weight loss program can help you get the weight off, but you have to keep it off. It is not easy to lose weight, and no-one takes kindly to change, but the results will definitely be worth it.
